Fusion: the final 2010 curtain call
It’s the end of the road: Cesca Dessain is no longer Fusion President. I’m ending ‘Twists in the Tales of Fusion’ in the way that I began, speaking to Cesca herself. But although the official handover has taken place, it’s not the end of her Fusion career by far. In fact, she’s not that sad at all…
So Cesca, I bet you’re sad, Fusion has pretty much come to an end for you!
Sad but happy – it all ended on a good note at the Fusion Oscars last week, I was happy with the number of people that turned up.
Are you pleased with how it all turned out in the end?
Yes, so pleased! But I’m xcited for next year, as I’ve said to Fiona, I will always be there to support them and told her to call me whenever – there’s always going to be so much to improve on.
Do you think there will be any major changes to the show this year? Will you be upset to see that happen?
There definitely will be, but there always is. That’s the exciting thing about a different committee – you don’t know what to expect and you’re always in anticipation of change.
As a second-year President, unlike the others who have been third years, you’ll actually be at York when preparations for the next show are taking place. How do you think you’ll react to that?
I don’t think I’ll be sad at all, it’ll be interesting to see Fusion in different perspective – I will get involved, it’s not as if I’ll be looking at it and thinking “this isn’t how it should be run”…it has to be taken differently – it’ll be a great way to get involved in something else!
So do you think you’ll be a dancer for next year’s show?
I’m not sure yet, whether I’ll be involved in the actual show or just helping out backstage yet.
How have you been occupying all your freed up time this term?
I’ve started to concentrate on my work – but I actually did the best last term in my degree! I got my best mark so far.
That’s quite ironic, really! And how did you feel about seeing the formation of a new committee, at the elections?
I got quite caught up about it just because people were standing there talking about how inspired they were and how much they wanted the role – it’s such a rewarding thing to hear, people wanting to get involved in something you’ve put so much work in to. I’m sure it was the same for Tim [Ngwena, a previous Fusion President] and the other members of this year’s past committee. To here that it has affected other people and that they want to do the same…it’s just great, it’s what Fusion is about – influencing and inspiration.
And the actual members of the new committee?
There’s so many different people, different characters, it looks like it will be really great. It’ll be a learning curve for everyone, no one has really done it before, it’s all about working and adapting together.
Has it been a bit weird seeing emails sent out by Fiona as the Fusion President?
I did think it would be weird but it’s not. She’s just continuing things, and I’m constantly speaking to her anyway, so I’m always happy to talk about it with her. It’s not about not letting go, it’s just that she obviously has questions and I’ve got the answers!
Do you have any departing words?
Just that I’m excited for next year and the next Fusion – everyone better get ready for it!
Having left Cesca in Vbar, all that awaits is the work of the new committee and a new show in Term Two next year! And so, the end of an era…for now. Thank you for reading this little blog, I hope you enjoyed it – I certainly enjoyed writing it – I hope you got a bit of insight into what Fusion is really all about: an inspirational show; a rewarding albeit stressful process; the dedication of those involved.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in last year’s Fusion, it really was quite something to be proud of, and good luck to everyone involved in the next. And for the record, I’m still as secretly envious as I was in my first blog that I wasn’t up there dancing too. Maybe next year. Just maybe…
